Women across the globe face fashion dilemmas every day and are eagerly waiting to get an answer to an age-old question: Why are women’s pockets so small? Though it’s a conflicting topic, it’s important to know the psychology and mindset behind the same. Let’s dive in to find out.
Why Women Pockets Are Smaller?
As a woman, I often wonder why we have to compromise when it comes to pockets. Men’s outfits have pockets that are designed in a way to accommodate stuff but women’s outfits either lack pockets or are useless if present. There can be different perspectives for this difference: maybe gender bias or fashion over function. I tried to figure out the reasons after speaking to women around me rather than consulting a fashion expert. Let’s read what women have to say.
3 Reasons Why Women’s Pockets Are Small
Here are the reasons behind smaller pockets in women’s outfits:
Gender Bias
The gender bias mindset sprawled slowly in the fashion industry as well. Though it’s changing now, a lot needs to be done to get to equilibrium.
“It is because, historically, women’s clothing has been associated with just being hyper-feminine and girly. Firstly it has majorly been manufactured by men for whom understanding the needs of a woman is not a priority. Also most importantly women’s clothing – at least stereotypically –has been well suited for the male gaze, so it has always been beauty and femininity over functionality.”- Shivangi.
Additionally, women were not entitled to work and earn money. So, that mindset led to the ‘No Pocket’ concept.

Marketing Strategy
The other reason that I believe is marketing strategy which includes the sale of handbags. Without pockets, women are compelled to invest in handbags to carry their stuff. Even for the smallest stuff a woman needs a bag, which led to the invention of expensive micro and mini bags in the market.
Anatomical Aspect
While exploring the reason, I came across a very interesting aspect which is overlooked. Pallabi said, anatomically most women have heavier pelvis which means carrying stuff in the pockets would add to the weight which makes movement restrictions. On the other hand, even women with lighter pelvis would not prefer to carry stuff in their pockets as it might not appear aesthetically pleasing and would be a fashion distraction.
